GUIDELINES ON 2008 SUPPLEMENTARY EXIT EXAMINATION OF VOCATIONAL TRAINING IN FAMILY MEDICINE HONG KONG COLLEGE OF FAMILY PHYSICIANS
     
OVERVIEW
The Hong Kong Academy of Medicine requires that all specialist training programmes including that of family medicine to be of at least six years in duration with an intermediate examination and an exit examination. A registered practitioner must have completed six years of vocational training in family medicine of the Hong Kong College of Family Physicians and passed both the intermediate examination and the exit examination before he/she is eligible for election to Fellowship of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine (Family Medicine). The Conjoint HKCFP/RACGP Fellowship Examination is the intermediate examination and the Exit Examination of Vocational Training is the exit examination of the vocational training programme in family medicine of the Hong Kong College of Family Physicians.
     
ELIGIBILITY AND REQUIREMENT
Applicants must satisfy all of the following criteria:-
  a. Only active Fellows, Full or Associate Members of the Hong Kong College of Family Physicians (HKCFP) who are fully registered with the Hong Kong Medical Council may apply for examination.
  b. Applicants must have a higher qualification in family medicine/general practice that is recognized by the Hong Kong College of Family Physicians and the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine (HKAM).
  c. Applicants must be trainees in Vocational Training in Family Medicine of the HKCFP who have had:
 
(i)
Certified completion of higher training for not more than three years, or
 
(ii)
At least 18 months of higher training in family medicine by August 31, 2008 approved by the Board of Vocational Training and Standards (BVTS) of the HKCFP.
 
Approval of training may take up to two months. Applicants MUST apply early to BVTS for
 
(i)
certification of completion of higher training, or
 
(ii)
Recommendation for Exit Examination 2008.
     
ELECTION TO FELLOWSHIP OF THE HONG KONG ACADEMY OF MEDICINE
Members should be aware that passing the Exit Examination does not equate to election to Fellowship of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine. Please refer to the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine Fellowship Handbook or consult the Specialty Board of the HKCFP about the criteria for election to Fellowship of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine (Family Medicine).

Deadline for submission of Clinical Audit Report: 1 September, 2008
Practice Assessment: July 2 to September 31 , 2008
Consultation Skills Assessment: July 2 to September 31 , 2008
     
APPLICATION & EXMINATION FEES
Application forms can be obtained from the College Secretariat, HKCFP or downloaded at the College website www.hkcfp.org.hk. Completed application form should be returned to the Specialty Board, HKCFP, 8/F Duke of Windsor Building, 15 Hennessy Road, Wan Chai, Hong Kong, together with the following:
 
  1. A cheque of the appropriate fee made payable to "HKCFP Education Ltd.", and
  2. For applicants of the Practice Assessment segment, 4 copies of the applied part(s) of practice assessment rating form (appendix C) with the candidate's part completed and the required attachments.
 
The full examination fee is $12,000 (including the administrative fee of $2,700) payable in full on first application. The fee for each individual segment is $1,500 for the Clinical Audit Report, $3,900 each for the Practice Assessment and Consultation Skills Assessment segments, plus the administrative fee, for each subsequent attempt. A cheque of the appropriate fee made payable to "HKCFP Education Ltd." should be enclosed with the application. All fees paid are neither refundable nor transferable.
 
Incomplete and ineligible applications will not be considered. An administration fee of HK$500 will be charged for these unsuccessful applications.
     
FORMAT AND CONTENTS
The aim of the Exit Examination of Vocational Training in Family Medicine of the Hong Kong College of Family Physicians is to test if candidates have achieved the objectives at the required standards at the end of their family medicine training. The Exit Examination will be divided into three segments the objectives of which reflect those of the Higher Vocational Training in Family Medicine: :
     
  1. The Clinical Audit Report assesses the candidate's knowledge, skills and attitudes in critical appraisal of information, self-audit, quality assurance and continuous professional improvement.
  2. The Practice Assessment assesses the candidate's knowledge, application of skills and ability to organize and manage an independent family medicine practice.
  3. The Consultation Skills Assessment assesses the candidate's knowledge, skills and attitude in communication, problem solving, working with families and management in different types of family medicine consultations.
 
The Practice Assessment and Consultation Skills Assessment will be carried out on site at the candidate's practice on any days during specified periods. Each segment will be assessed independently by at least two examiners appointed by the Specialty Board. The details of the format and examination criteria of each segment are described below.
